Review: Knight of Light (The Watchers #1) by Deirdra Eden

“The Watchers” are supernatural beings in human form, charged with protecting mankind from the armies of darkness. Unfortunately, some of these Watchers go bad.

Deirdra Eden’s The Watcher’s Series is written in a traditional fairytale style with a young girl’s discovery of incredible, but dangerous powers within herself, a cast of humorous side-kicks, a quest for greater self-discovery and purpose, and villains of epic proportions.

In England, 1270 A.D., Auriella (pronounced yurr-ee-ella) flees her village after being accused of witchcraft. Pursued by nightmarish creatures, she struggles to accept the truth about her humanity.

Filled with fairies, dwarves, pixies, dragons, and monsters, Knight of Light is an enthralling tale that will capture the imaginations of readers young and old.

My Thoughts: "She's not a witch; she's not human either. She's something much more powerful." These lines from the book trailer immediately grabbed my attention. I wanted to know more who the main character was and was curious to learn what the story was about. Though I could be very picky when it comes to fantasy books, I did not find myself hesitating to start this one.

The story was fun. I was completely captivated when reading the first sentence. The author knew how to grabbed her readers' attention and keep it, with all of her wonderful descriptions of Auriella and her unique powers. I loved how all the magical creatures were introduced and how they all had important roles concerning the main character. My only complaint about the story was how it shifted its focus. I was fascinated with how Auriella ran away from her village and how she tried to survive Hazella, while at the same time trying to escape from the Shadow Lord. However, I was confused that the focus turned to Auriella becoming a knight. Not much was said about the Shadow Lord. Perhaps more will be dealt with it in the other books in the series? Other than this confusion, I could not help but enjoy all the fairy tale elements that the book entailed.

Next, I highly enjoyed Auriella's character. For being an orphan, not being wanted by people, and constantly being mistreated, Auriella was still a sweet girl. She was brave and intelligent. Auriella did have her weaknesses but it only made her believable. Her experiences also helped her develop into a strong female character. The fact that she became a knight was a bonus for me since it portrayed a positive role to girls.

As a whole, this was a wonderful start to an adventurous series. I found myself highly entertained and I could easily see many teens having fun with this one. I look forward to the rest of the series. I rate it:

About the Author:

My goal in writing is to saturate my books with intrigue, mystery, romance, and plot twists that will keep my readers in suspense. I want to see fingerprints on the front and back covers where readers have gripped the novel with white knuckles! Aside from writing, I enjoy jousting in arenas, planning invasions, horseback riding through open meadows, swimming in the ocean, hiking up mountains, camping in cool shady woods, climbing trees barefoot, and going on adventures.
